CAT (Common Admission Test) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for admission to various postgraduate management programs, such as Master of Business Administration (MBA), offered by various participating institutes across the country. The exam is held once a year, usually in November.
To be eligible for the CAT exam, a candidate must have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks. There is no age limit for appearing in the exam.
The CAT exam comprises three sections - Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). The exam is conducted in a computer-based mode and is of a total duration of three hours.
Candidates who clear the CAT exam are eligible for admission to various postgraduate management programs offered by participating institutes across the country. The final selection of candidates is based on their performance in the CAT exam, as well as other factors such as academic performance, work experience, and performance in the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI), as per the admission criteria of the institute they wish to apply to.

Exam Pattern: The CAT exam consists of three sections:

The exam is conducted in online mode and is of 3 hours duration. The total number of questions is 100, with 34 in VARC, 32 in DILR, and 34 in QA. Each correct answer carries 3 marks, and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.

Application Process: The application process for the CAT exam is online. Candidates can apply on the official website of CAT. The application fee for the exam is Rs. 2,000 for General/OBC Category and Rs. 1,000 for SC/ST/PwD Category, which can be paid online or offline.
Important Dates: The important dates for the CAT exam are announced by the IIMs. The notification for the exam is usually released in the month of July/August, and the exam is conducted in the month of November/December.
Selection Procedure: The selection procedure for the CAT exam is based on the score obtained by the candidate in the exam and the subsequent rounds of Group Discussion (GD), Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI) conducted by the participating institutes.
